Healthy Schools
Exciting News - Caulfeild's going “healthy” now too!
If you’ve been doing your night time reading and getting the “latest” on the Caulfeild PAC website, you now know that Caulfeild is going “green”! Here’s the exciting news - not only are we going “Green”, but we are becoming a “healthy” green! How are we doing that (along with the rest of the schools in our district?).
Well, let me first explain that we now “have” to become healthier because the Ministry of Education has given us nutritional guidelines that we must now follow, although I’m sure we were going to anyway. In a nutshell, all food and beverage sold at the “Elementary School” level must meet certain requirements in an effort to reduce sugar, salt and fat.
And what does that have to do with “we, the parents”, you ask? Well….if you think about it…most food “sold” in our school is done by the parents – through our Lunch Program, PAC events, fundraisers. Luckily we sell giftwrap instead of those nasty chocolate covered almonds and luckily, our lunch menu is mostly comprised of healthy foods. Pop at our school – not! Donuts – not! Potato Chips – not! So in order for us to meet the guidelines, we have the fortunate position in that we only have to “tweak” our menu offerings. And don’t despair – this does not mean we will now only be selling broccoli and tofu. We will still be offering the delicious food items offered by Magic Lunch Box and Planet Pizza but some of the menu items will be different. The other good news is that because our suppliers are very health committed (or smart enough to know that they can win a ton of business if they change their recipes), they will be making the necessary changes for us! Stay tuned.
